Founders and fund managers

Does Toldie keep my secrets?

Yes. Toldie sends your updates only to the investors or limited partners you approved or added, and each one has a link that whoever holds it can open and forward. No feed, no directory, no benchmark built from your text. Toldie's administrators can read the latest edits founders and fund managers make to drafts, and the follow-up questions Toldie asked about them, which is how Toldie learns to write better. Some mail also reaches a person at Toldie whole: a reply sent to toldie@toldie.com instead of the reply address (yours, or a reader's whose mail app ignored it), mail to hello@, press@ and privacy@, and the notice when a report puts a sender on hold. The drafting model gets your reply text for processing only, never the names of your investors or LPs, and it is not used to train anything. Raw replies are deleted after 30 days and erased from backups within 120, and in Settings you can have finished updates deleted 90 or 30 days after sending. Details, with encryption and retention, are in the privacy policy.

How does an investor or LP know it is really me?

Your exact address is shown on your link page and in every confirmation email, so your readers can check it is the one they know. If it is a work address, Toldie loads your domain's site and asks its model whether the site is really yours; they are told the result plainly, including when it could not tell. You can settle it for good with one DNS record from Settings, and they then see that you proved the domain. A domain has one owner: a sign-up on yours from someone else is held until you say it is a teammate, while your own second company or fund on it is not. Changing your reply address needs a yes from both the old and the new one. And every investor or LP on your list either asked and was approved by you, or was added by you, and any of them can report a sender with one click, which pauses sending until a person has looked.

How do I know an investor or LP is who they say?

You see their name and email address before you approve them, and nobody receives a word until you do. Funds, family offices and other firms can prove their domain once at toldie.com/claim, and you then see 'verified: theirfirm.com' on the request. Decline anyone you do not recognise; they are told nothing. Toldie never adds a reader on its own.

I run more than one company or fund. Can I manage them all?

Yes. Add another at toldie.com/onboard?new=1; once you have two, the name in the header becomes a switcher. Each company or fund has its own link, readers, updates and reply address, and the readers of one never see another. If you also read someone else's updates, as an investor in a company or an LP in a fund, that is separate again: you get their updates by email like any reader, and nothing about your own appears there.

Does Toldie need access to my inbox?

No. Toldie never connects to your email account. It sends you an email and reads only the replies you send back to it. Nothing else in your inbox is touched.

Will it change my numbers or put words in my mouth?

It cannot. The draft may only contain figures you typed; anything else is rejected before you see it. It keeps your phrasing and removes only the hedges people put on their own wins. You see the exact text before anything sends.

What if I have a bad quarter?

You say so, in a sentence, and Toldie states it as plainly as you did. It never softens a setback and never dramatises one. Investors and LPs respect a short honest line far more than silence, and silence is what Toldie exists to prevent.

What do my investors see when I go quiet?

Not silence. After two quiet weeks, or an empty month for monthly readers, Toldie writes to them itself: you are busy, Toldie is asking every week so they do not have to, and the reason usually follows in your words. They stop chasing, and they stop feeling like the one who chases. You get one line in your next question saying it was done.

Do I have to reply the day Toldie asks?

No. Skip by not replying. Toldie asks once more after 48 hours, then leaves it until next week. Two quiet weeks and the question gets softer. You can pause it entirely from your home page.

Will my investors or LPs get an email every week?

Only the ones who chose weekly. Each reader picks weekly, every two weeks, monthly or quarterly when they sign up, and monthly and quarterly readers get one rollup. You never decide frequency for them, and nobody is over-emailed. For monthly and quarterly readers Toldie combines the period into one structured update, each fact once, made only from updates you already approved, and tells you before it goes, with a link to stop it. Your time bodyguard.

Can I edit before it goes out?

Always. Every draft comes with Send, Edit and Skip. Reply "send" to approve, or reply with what to change and Toldie rewrites it. Nothing reaches an investor or LP without your tap or your word.

Who sees the sassy character?

You do. Toldie's voice lives in the emails it sends to you. Your investors or LPs receive a plain update in your words, from your name via Toldie, with no jokes in it.

Do I need to add my investors or LPs by hand?

Share your link and they add themselves, choosing their own cadence; you approve each one. If you already have a list, paste it on your Investors page (LPs, for a fund): because you added them, they are on your list at once and get one email from you saying so, with a link to change how often or step off. Anyone who unsubscribed is not put back that way: Add back asks them by email, and they are on your list again only if they confirm. Nobody who comes through your link gets anything without confirming and your approval. Each company or fund has 25 seats to start; that page shows how many are used.

Will it land in spam?

Updates are sent from your name via Toldie, signed and authenticated, with a one-tap unsubscribe and a plain-text part. Replies route back to you. That is what mail providers reward.

Can I see who reads my updates?

Yes, unless a reader turns it off. Each update carries a tiny image, and when a reader's mail app loads it, Toldie records which reader opened which update, when, and every time they open it again. Your list of investors or LPs shows each one's opens, ranked warmest first, with the offers of help they sent and their "useful" or "not useful" taps. Questions stay anonymous: they are never counted against a reader. Readers who opened none of their last few updates (four for weekly readers, three every two weeks, two monthly or quarterly) are listed at the top, and each comes off with one tap; they get no email about it, and the updates themselves tell them that opening is how they stay on the list. A "useful" or "not useful" tap on an update counts as opening it, in that list and in the ranking. Toldie never takes anyone off for you: a mail app that blocks images looks the same as a reader who never opens. Apple Mail's privacy protection loads every email as it arrives, read or not, so its opens are marked as possibly automatic and count for less. When you raise, the readers who open most are the ones to call. A reader who turns this off in their settings is never listed as not opening; you see that they don't share opens, and they rank by their offers of help and taps, below every reader who opens.

Investors and LPs can ask questions. Will that mean more pressure?

Less. Each reader gets one question a month, they go to Toldie, not your inbox, and Toldie keeps only the ones most of them are asking, at most two a week. You answer once, in the update, for everyone. A reader asking for a number you do not track gets the answer you give, in your words. And one who can help just says so, "I know their CFO, I can introduce you Monday", and Toldie tells you.

What is the strength grade on my draft?

Every draft is graded out of 5 by the playbook: what happened, what it means, and the number. For a company, a customer's own words, usage nobody pushed, or what you spent and what it bought count as much as revenue. At 4 or 5 Toldie asks nothing. Below that it asks the one or two questions your readers would ask first; answer in a clause and they fold in, or send as is.

Can I attach a chart or a PDF?

Not yet. Toldie sends short text updates on purpose: they get read on phones. A link to a dashboard or a document works fine in your reply.

Free now. What will it cost later?

Founders never pay. Funds and accelerators will be able to pay for a portfolio view later. That is the whole model.

Who is behind Toldie, and what if it shuts down?

Serial founders who became investors, one of whom went eight months without sending an update. Toldie runs on a stack that costs less than a coffee a month, so there is nothing to run out of. If it ever closed, your investors or LPs would still have every email they received, and you could delete your company or fund from Settings first.

What happens right after I enter the code?

Sign in with your email, say whether you update investors about a company or limited partners about a fund, give its name, its stage and your first name, and you get your link. The first question arrives straight away, on your home page and in your inbox. Answer it in a sentence and your first update exists before you close the tab; it waits there until someone is on your list.

Fund managers

Does Toldie replace my quarterly report or capital account statements?

No. Toldie sends the short update between them, in your words: a new investment, a follow-on, news from the portfolio. Your reports, statements and anything your fund documents require go out the way they do today.

My fund's updates are confidential. Can an LP update be forwarded?

Its link needs no login, so whoever holds it can open it and forward it, as with every Toldie update. Every LP update says it is confidential to your limited partners, to be forwarded only as your fund's agreements allow. Toldie cannot stop a forward, so write each update as one that might travel.

Will Toldie put performance figures in my update?

Only the ones you typed. The draft can only contain numbers you wrote, so a return or a multiple appears only if you put it there. What you tell your limited partners about performance stays your decision.

Can I use it for Fund I and Fund II?

Yes. Add each fund at toldie.com/onboard?new=1 and switch between them from the header. Each has its own link, limited partners, updates and reply address, and they can share your firm's domain.

Can I also hear from the founders in my portfolio?

Yes. The portfolio kit on the fund managers' page invites up to a hundred founders at once, each invite naming your fund. When one signs up, Toldie asks them to approve you, and you get their updates like any investor.

How often will my LPs hear from me?

As often as each of them chooses: weekly, every two weeks, monthly or quarterly. Toldie still asks you every week; quarterly readers get one combined update when the quarter ends, made from the updates you already approved. Toldie tells you before it goes, with a link to stop it.

What do my LPs see when I go quiet?

Not silence, and no guess at why. After two quiet weeks, an LP who reads weekly gets a short note from Toldie: they are still on your list, Toldie is asking you every week, and your news comes to them when there is some. An LP on a longer cadence gets the same note at the end of a period of theirs (two weeks, a month or a quarter) with nothing from you in it.

Investors and LPs

Do I need an account to read updates?

No. Updates arrive by email, and each one's link opens without a login. Sign in with the address they arrive at to see everything you follow in one place.

How often will I hear?

As often as you chose: weekly, every two weeks, monthly or quarterly. Change it, or unsubscribe, from the link at the bottom of any update, in one tap.

Does the sender know when I open?

Yes, unless you turn it off. Each update carries a tiny image, and when your mail app loads it, the founder or fund manager sees that you opened that update, when, and each time you open it again. Apple Mail's privacy protection loads it whether you read the email or not, so those opens are marked as possibly automatic. Opening is how you stay on the list, with no reply needed: anyone who stops opening may be taken off, so nobody has to write a goodbye. A "useful" or "not useful" tap on an update counts as opening it. If your mail app blocks images, turn opens off and you're never counted as not opening. To turn it off, use the settings link at the bottom of any update: your updates then carry no image, the opens already recorded are deleted (backups that still hold them are erased within 120 days), and the sender sees only that you don't share opens. Whether or not you share opens, they see your offers of help, which carry your address anyway, and your "useful" or "not useful" taps; with opens off, they place you on their list by those, below readers who open. Your questions reach them without names and are never counted or shown against you.

Can I ask a question?

Reply to any update. You get one question a month; Toldie bundles what readers are asking and puts the most-asked to the founder or fund manager, who answers once, for everyone. The update never says who asked. An offer of help does not count against it and reaches them directly, with your address on it.

How do I get updates from someone who is not on Toldie yet?

Invite them. Investors invite the founders they backed at toldie.com/for-investors, and LPs the funds they invest in at toldie.com/for-lps. The day one signs up, Toldie asks them to approve you, and once they do you hear from them as often as you chose.

How do I know an update is really from them?

Before you subscribe you see the sender's exact address, and whether Toldie could confirm the domain is really theirs. If it is not the person you know, do not confirm. Every update carries a one-click report that pauses the sender until a person has looked.

LPs and family offices

I am an LP in several funds. Can I follow them all here?

Yes. Each fund manager on Toldie has their own link, and you can invite the ones who are not on Toldie yet from toldie.com/for-lps. Sign in to see every fund and company you follow in one place.

Can a family office prove who it is?

Yes. Add one DNS record at toldie.com/claim, and every fund manager or founder whose updates you ask for sees 'verified: youroffice.com' on the request.

Does it replace the fund's quarterly report?

No. It is the short update between reports, in the fund manager's words. Reports, capital calls and statements still come the way they do today.

Can I forward an LP update?

Its link opens without a login, so it can be forwarded, but every LP update says it is confidential to the fund's limited partners: forward it only as your fund's agreements allow.
